project overview

Donning dual hats as the Design Director and Front-End Programmer for RoleRoster, I juggled the artistic and analytical, conjuring up a brand identity system and forging a unique UI language, all while crafting a sturdy scaffold of front-end code for the responsive web-based application's MVP. RoleRoster's MVP sets out on a quest to vanquish the perennial dragon of tabletop game scheduling woes and get more gamers to the table.

THE mission

My friend Keyton and I, met for lunch, one week after participating in a tabletop game session with a mutual friend, and discussed the issue of game scheduling and what could be done to solve this age-old pain point. We asked ourselves: How might we navigate conflicting adult schedules with a tool tailored to tabletop gaming enthusiasts? This lunchtime conversation would lead to devising a platform that sought to remove the common obstacles to getting games scheduled.

BRAND IDENTITY SYSTEM & UI

I created a scalable company identity and UI component system that feels modern but isn't detached from the "analog" tabletop community it serves. Accessibility with strong contrast ratios and highly readable font choices were some of the guiding design principles throughout. Judicious use of stylized and unique AI-generated illustration creates a memorable experience both within marketing pieces as well as the saas screens.

social content

In crafting the promotional strategy for RoleRoster, I came up with the idea of tapping into the rich tapestry of iconic fantasy RPG lore characters. These figures from the D&D pantheon and beyond, served as our emissaries, their well-loved narratives amplifying our central brand promise: You can focus on strategies to best combat the villains and leave the scheduling headaches up to RoleRoster.

the STATUS/results

RoleRoster nears completion of it's MVP after several iterations of Figma designs, TailwindCSS prototypes (btw - TailwindCSS is fantastic and I've thoroughly enjoying using it as a front-end code framework), and a few rounds of qualitative user testing. The broader saas offering continues to scale with new and exciting feature-sets. Meanwhile, the sign-up list continues to increase in number and some of the biggest game industry blogs and reviewers have expressed excitement and praise including the venerable Geek Native.
